another reason

many things about this year of my
life...
this arrived the other day from Marti,
Fieldlady...who for so long would comment
on nance/nandas' and my cloth work but always
adding that she did not do such things.
What she has always given us through the
years are beautiful photographs and beautiful
words telling of her meanderings through
fields and down wooded paths, her collecting
of the "sacred ordinary" and placing these
twigs and blooms, pods and leaves joyfully
in her home.
When India's book Eco Colour first was available
here, i immediately knew it was going to
become a necessity for me, and then i
suddenly knew the larger reason and was lucky
enough to get two copies. Since receiving the
book, Marti the field lady has become
EcoColorista Supreme, creating some of the
most delicate and elegant cloths with found
and thrifted materials. i have been seeing them
as it all has unfolded over the months in
photographs she has shared but the other day
a package arrived and here, oh here, an
array of such amazing generosity.

nandas...well...deserve is a
funny word...and i can't imagine
what would equal these cloths...
its just...well, i don't know a
word. i guess, really, an
expression of who Marti is...yes
that's it. a cloth Marti.
smile, i like that.

A beautiful and generous internet/blogging friendship... I am sure you will enjoy using these wonderful pieces Marti sent you. It's lovely to use gifted pieces in your cloths.

Jacky...yes. an amazing friendship, actually, sistership.
i think 6 years? going on 7?
We have met once, face to face,
which was perfect but even without
that, it would be what it is. there
are not so many things in life that
can be guaranteed, but this, ongoing, is one i would stake my
life on.

You are very fortunate! I can't even find someone willing to SELL some eco prints. I have India's book, but it's just for my storehouse of knowledge. I really don't want to get into dyeing right now. I was able to catch a piece from Arlee (but haven't received it yet)I guess everyone who does this is treasuring theirs so feel very blessed to be gifted with some.

Helen...maybe someday the
Colourista Supreme will blog.
the encouraging thing is that
she just basically
goes outside
walks
care Fully and respect Fully
gathers small bits of windfall
places them in mason jars on her
porch railing, sometimes bundles,
some times sits in her garage
to "cause them to go into the
cloth" (pounds them)
waits
small doings, really, but with
just so wonderful results...

small doings are doings aren´t they? big or small, they are.. results are results, not necessarily analogous to the doings
somebody must have said that better than me
just that when something makes a flash in my mind, I want to share
what a lovely circle, here

Manya...small doings are my most
loved kind. whether or not they
yield "results".

i spent quite some time this
evening describing your birthday
blog photograph of you and your
son to my daughter whose son
is 20. she said sometimes still,
when he "forgets himself", he will
still lean into her like that.
she had him when she was 18. and
after i hung up, i realized that
MY son and i create a similar
configuration still. he is 35.
Sons.

Marti's dyeing is a treasure.

grace Forrest~Maestas said...

Kaite...it is. and i know
you saying that means a lot to her.
She would do it if no one at all
ever saw it but her own self.
that's another interesting part.
it's first and foremost between
her and the plant.

It's a kind of magic, I think. Natural magic, perhaps.

this natural dyeing seems to be like alchemy... and relationship. the process you describe and the cloths are beyond beautiful...
